A battery cable is used in various vehicles as a connector between the batteries and the starter or ground. It is typically made of multi-stranded wire that conducts a nominal system voltage of 60 V or less, which is necessary to run a starter motor. Battery cables, similar to starter or ground cables, are used in the electrical systems of surface vehicles such as automobiles, buses, and trucks. The SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) sets the standard for automotive parts, assemblies and systems, including battery cables. The different types of wires for battery cables include the SGT, SGX and SGR.
STT / SGT
The STT / SGT type of battery cable wire is used for general purpose circuits or systems. It is usually insulated with thermoplastic or PVC (polyvinyl chloride). This type of wire is the least expensive and is suitable for most applications requiring battery cables.
SGX
The SGX type of battery cable wire is used for areas or systems that tend to get hotter than general purpose circuits. It also provides aging, abrasion, and heat resistance. It is commonly insulated with cross-linked polyethelene, also known as XLP.
SGR
The SGR type of battery cable wire is suitable for more heavy-duty applications. It offers resistance to acid, abrasion, alkalis, coolant, diesel fuel, ethanol, flame, gas, ozone, power steering fluid, oil and transmission fluid. It is typically insulated with synthetic or ground rubber.
