Oil stains can mar otherwise beautiful block paving.
Block paving is a much more visually appealing driveway choice than standard concrete. While stylistically elegant with rows of colored brick blocks, this paving option is harder to clean due to crevices and cracks between the blocks. If you have an oil puddle on the paving that has dripped down from your car, you'll need to remove the stain by hand. First soak up the excess oil from the paving, and then remove the resulting stain underneath.
Instructions
1. Apply a liberal amount of fresh clay-based cat litter to the oil stain. Cover the stain well enough so you can't see any oil through the litter. Press down on the cat litter in order to fill any cracks between the block paving stones. Leave the cat litter in place for 30 minutes while it soaks up most of the oil.
2. Mix the cat litter with a push broom. This will bring the clean litter to the bottom of the pile just in case there is still any oil left that can be soaked up by the clay-based material. Wait another 30 minutes, then sweep up and dispose of the cat litter.
3. Soak up remaining remnants of oil on the surface of the block paving with an old, dry rag. Press the rag onto the surface of the paving and into the gaps. Don't rub the oil stain as it will make it harder to remove. Throw out the rag.
4. Pour grease-cutting detergent into a bucket. Look at the directions on the bottle and add hot water as instructed. Dip a scrub brush into the bucket to get it moist with the detergent and water mixture. Scrub at the stain on the block paving. Focus your attention on both the surface of the paving as well as the spaces between the blocks. Rinse the scrub brush in the bucket periodically.
5. Rinse off the surface of the paving with a bucket of hot water to see your progress. If there is still an oil stain, keep scrubbing with the scrub brush and detergent mixture until satisfied with the result.
Tips Warnings
Removing oil stains from paving requires getting on your hands and knees. Kneel on a pad or cushion to make the experience more comfortable.
