Flush A Singlehandle Faucet Valve

When your faucet's water flow rate slows down, flushing out the cartridge is the solution. This repair will remove built-up sediments, minerals or debris in the cartridge, all of which can block water flow through the cartridge, causing lower water pressure. It only takes about 10 minutes to flush out a cartridge, and the procedure involves very few complicated steps. If you have any experience fixing household appliances, this project is easily within your grasp.

Instructions

1. Turn the water inlet valve near the water heater to the Off position by rotating it counterclockwise.

2. Take off the handle to the faucet by unscrewing the Allen-head screw near the handle's base with an Allen wrench. Turn the screw counterclockwise and remove it, and then slide the handle off the faucet.

3. Remove the trim sleeve, bonnet and retaining nut, which is a round nut that screws onto the body of the faucet under the handle. You can also unscrew the cartridge screws on top of the cartridge with a screwdriver, if the faucet uses screws to hold the handle in place.

4. Take the cartridge out of the faucet. Hold it directly under a stream of clean water, moving it gently from side to side, allowing the clean water to enter the cartridge and wash away the sediment buildup. Do not use chemicals to clean the cartridge, as they will remain in the cartridge after it is replaced in the faucet.

5. Install the cartridge in the faucet and replace the cartridge screws, or bonnet, retaining nut and trim sleeve. Replace the handle and operate the faucet. If the flushing did not remove the sediment buildup, take out the cartridge by following Steps 2 and 3, and replace the cartridge with a new one from a plumbing or home improvement store.
