Are Lilac Bushes Poisonous to Animals?

Significance
Lilac is the common name for a group or genus of plants called Syringa. The common lilac is Syringia vulgaris. The University of Arkansas points out that lilacs are also not poisonous to people, which are a type of mammal.
Misconception
Persian lilac, Melia azerdarach, which is not related to true lilacs, is poisonous to dogs and horses, according to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. Other names for Persian lilac include Chinaberry tree, the bead tree and Pride-of-India.
