Make Country Potpourri With Apples & Oranges

Display potpourri in shallow bowls or baskets.

People use potpourri to lend a pleasant fragrance around the room. Potpourri comes in a range of scents, and country potpourri with apples and oranges will smell autumnal and warm, like a cup of apple cider. Display the finished potpourri mix in a rustic shallow basket. The textures, colors and overall scent of apples and oranges give the potpourri that homey, comforting feel. Most people follow a basic potpourri guide and then alter the recipe to suit their preferences. Exact quantities for potpourri depends on the ingredients on hand and how much potpourri you want.

Instructions

1. Dry cranberries on a parchment-lined baking sheet for about 8 hours.

2. Set the oven to 170 degrees Fahrenheit.

3. Slice the apples, oranges, limes and lemons about 1/4 inch thick.

4. Bake the fruits for five to seven hours until the citrus are dry and the apples are dry but still bendable. Allow the fruits to cool slightly on the counter.

5. Combine the dried cranberries, baked fruits, cinnamon sticks and spices together in a large bowl. Sprinkle the vanilla over the mixture evenly. Toss the mixture gently with your hands; spoons may crush or break the fruit. Allow the mixture to cool and dry overnight. A well-balanced potpourri will have a good blend of colors from each of the fruits used in the mixture.

6. Display potpourri in a basket that matches your d cor colors. Line the bottom of the basket with a napkin or plastic bag to prevent the small pieces from slipping through the weave of the basket.

7. Package extra potpourri in plastic bags to save for later use or to give to friends.

8. Refresh the potpourri by gently stirring it or adding a few drops of essential oil as needed.

Tips Warnings

Adjust the potpourri recipe to suit your tastes. For example, add more apple or cranberries to the mixture if you feel the potpourri smells too citrusy. Keep in mind that adding a particular fruit will change both the scent and coloring of the potpourri mix.

Display the potpourri alongside your other decorations in the room. Don't limit yourself to a natural colored basket for the potpourri. Coordinate the basket color to match other elements in the room, or decorate it with ribbons or dried flowers.

Don't let the potpourri get wet or damp, or it may start to breed mold.
