Windflower Planting & Growing Instructions

Windflowers come in a variety of colors, including white.

Windflower, also called anemone, are a type of colorful flower that grows from tubers. They come in a variety of colors, including white, purple, blue, pink and red. The flowers make great floral decorations and bouquets, although the flowers do not live long after being cut. They also add color to yards and flower gardens and are relatively easy to plant and grow with some simple care. According to North Carolina State University the plant is poisonous.

Instructions

1. Store the windflower bulbs (tubers) in paper bags in cool and well-ventilated areas until planting. According to the University of California, anemone bulbs can be stored for about a week before planting. The National Gardening Association recommends planting bulbs as soon after getting them as possible.

2. Prepare the soil for planting by adding a light organic mixture with good drainage to heavy clay or heavy sand soils. The National Gardening Association recommends adding 2 to 3 inches of compost or peat moss to heavy soils and mixing it in to a depth of at least 6 inches.

3. Plant the bulbs in the fall before the spring that they will flower in. The National Gardening Association recommends planting bulbs at a depth of twice their height. According to North Carolina State University, the ideal planting depth for windflowers is usually about 3 inches.

4. Fertilize the planting area after burying the bulbs. The National Gardening Association recommends sprinkling some low nitrogen fertilizer on the soil above the bulbs, such as a 9-6-6 fertilizer.

5. Water the bulbs, and keep the area from drying out during the winter or spring. With sufficient soil moisture, windflowers will bloom in the spring.

Tips Warnings

Some types of animals, like mice and squirrels may dig into the ground and eat or remove flower bulbs. If there are a lot of small animals in the garden area, consider putting chicken wire or some other sort of cage around the planting area.
