Replace A Battery In A Sonicare Hx9500

Replace the battery in your Sonicare Hx9500.

As part of the Sonicare Elite line of electric toothbrushes, the Sonicare Hx9500 features two cleaning speeds and two sizes of toothbrush heads to make for a personalized brushing experience. When the rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery in your Sonicare Hx9500 dies, Sonicare recommends that the entire electric toothbrush be thrown out in favor of a new one. Though Sonicare insists that the rechargeable batteries in its electric toothbrushes cannot be replaced, that isn't actually the case. If you're adventurous, it's possible to successfully replace the battery in your Sonicare Hx9500 electric toothbrush.

Instructions

1. Make sure that the rechargeable nickel-cadmium battery in your Sonicare Hx9500 toothbrush is depleted before attempting to replace it. Lay your electric toothbrush on a soft towel or cushion, turn it on and let it run until it stops.

2. Pry out the trapezoid-shaped rubber piece on the back of your Sonicare Hx9500 electric toothbrush with a flathead screwdriver. Set the rubber piece aside in a safe place until it is time to reassemble your electric toothbrush.

3. Remove both the toothbrush and cuff piece of the replaceable brush head from your Sonicare Hx9500 electric toothbrush. Separate the toothbrush piece from the cuff piece and set the toothbrush piece aside. Screw the cuff piece onto the handle of your Sonicare Hx9500, twisting the cuff clockwise. Pull the internal components free once you feel the housing loosen.

4. Locate the two soldering points that hold the battery to the printed circuit board in your Sonicare Hx9500 toothbrush. Cover the soldering points with desoldering braid and touch the tip of a soldering iron to the braid to remove the soldering points and free the dead nickel-cadmium battery. Recycle the old battery to prevent the toxic cadmium in the battery from harming the environment.

5. Solder two 2-inch wires to the same places on the PC board where the old soldering points were located. Tuck the wires behind the PC board so that you can access the other ends from the toothbrush's battery compartment.

6. Rub both ends of a rechargeable AAA battery gently with a square of coarse grade sandpaper. Solder the positive wire to the positive terminal on your rechargeable battery and then solder the negative wire to the battery's negative terminal. Make sure to set the soldering iron to a low setting to avoid damaging the rechargeable battery. Insert the rechargeable battery into the Sonicare Hx9500's battery compartment once the soldering points have dried.

7. Put your Sonicare Hx9500 toothbrush back together. Note that the assembly process is much easier than the disassembly process. Fit the internal components back into the electric toothbrush housing. Pop the trapezoid-shaped rubber piece back into the back side of your Sonicare Hx9500 and replace the brush head to complete the battery replacement process.

Tips Warnings

Consider replacing the nickel-cadmium battery in your Sonicare Hx9500 with a nickel-metal hydride battery. NiMH batteries lack the environmentally dangerous cadmium found in NiCad batteries, making them much better for the environment. In addition to the environmental advantages of using NiMH batteries, they also last longer and have twice the energy capacity of nickel-cadmium batteries.

Operate your soldering iron carefully to avoid injury.
