Become A Foster Parent In Riverside County California

Foster parenting offers a needy child a stable home environment.

Foster parenting offers a stable home environment to children who cannot be cared for by their natural parents. Riverside County, California, has approximately 4,000 children who need the security and stability of foster homes. Intensive investigation and licensing of potential foster parents and their homes are integral components of becoming a foster parent. When you consider the positive emotional and physical benefits to the child who enters a foster home, the complex application process for foster parenting is worth the time and effort.

Instructions

1. Register for an orientation session given by the State of California Community Care Licensing (CCL) and the Riverside County Department of Public Social Services. Two locations hold the sessions monthly: Moreno Valley and the Desert Region. If you attend the Desert Region orientation in Indio you need to preregister.

2. Attend the orientation session, which lasts for approximately three to five hours depending on the location. All applications for foster parenting are supplied at the orientation. If you are married, both parents must attend. Single parents are welcome. A photo ID is required.

3. Fill out the applications provided by the CCL and Riverside County. All must be completed and mailed to the respective agencies.

4. Interview with a social worker.

5. Pass a criminal-background check. All adults and anyone involved in caring for the foster child are required to pass this examination.

6. Schedule and pass a prelicensing household check of your home by a county or state administrator. A list of housing requirements is provided at the orientation.

7. Pass the health and TB-testing examinations.

8. Pass the CPR and first-aid courses.

9. Attend a mandatory 33-hour training course on childcare.
