Identify Ethan Allen Furniture

Ethan Allen furniture was created by Theodore Baumritter and Nathan Ancell in 1939. Their company, the Baumritter Corporation, developed Ethan Allen furniture in an early American style they believed would address the decorating needs of women. Since then, the Ethan Allen furniture brand has changed owners multiple times, and has developed a variety of furniture lines under the Ethan Allen banner. With careful inspection of your furniture, you can determine whether the company created the piece.

Instructions

1. Inspect the furniture, including the bottom, back and drawer interiors. Look for a company stamp with one of the following names: The Baumritter Corporation, Ethan Allen Industries, Ethan Allen, Interco, Ethan Allen Inc., Green Mountain Holding Corporation and Ethan Allen Interiors. These names represent the changes the company has undergone, as well as the holding companies that oversaw the manufacturing of the furniture.

2. Look for a serial number on the stamp. The serial number identifies the furniture as a specific item manufactured by Ethan Allen. To verify that the stamp is original, contact your local Ethan Allen store and provide the serial number. The retailer will look up the number and match it with your furniture.

3. Determine the style of antique Ethan Allen furniture that you have. While Ethan Allen started with its trademark Heirloom furniture, it also created other furniture lines from the 1940s through the 1980s. These include the Treasury Collection, the English-style Georgian Court and Royal Charter Collections, the romantic Country French Collection and the Canova contemporary line. The Treasury Collection consists of a variety of furniture and other products that resemble antiques from 1700 to 1850.

4. Determine the style of your modern furniture. Modern furniture styles for Ethan Allen varied from the 1990s to 2007. These included the traditional Heirloom Collection, as well as American Impressions, American Dimensions, Country Crossings, Legacy and Radius. American Impressions consists of solid cherrywood, American Dimensions is known for its geometric shapes and Country Crossings line is made from maple. The Legacy line is Ethan Allen's Italian furniture, focusing on Italian architectural styles, and Radius is furniture in the style of the 1960s.

5. Determine the style of your newer furniture. Since 2007, Ethan Allen has concentrated its furniture styling on seven lines. These have included Metro, Villa, Loft, Global, Modern Glamour and Country House. Metro is for the young urban furniture buyer, while Villa focuses on styles reminiscent of Italian and French furnishings. Loft is casual urban, Global is contemporary classic, Modern Glamour is focused on the wealthy life and Country House is created with a country lifestyle in mind.
