Make Cupcakes With Applesauce Instead Of Oil

You can successfully substitute applesauce for oil in most cupcake recipes.

One cup of unsweetened canned applesauce contains approximately 102 calories and no fat, according to SELF NutritionData. A cup of corn and canola oil, on the other hand, contains 1984 calories and 90 percent of your recommended daily fat intake. By replacing a single cup of oil with applesauce in a recipe that makes 12 cupcakes, you can reduce the calories in each cupcake by about 157. The applesauce will make the cupcakes slightly more moist than they would have been if you had used oil and will also make them tougher if you mix the batter too much.

Instructions

1. Measure out an amount of applesauce equal to the amount of oil you wish to replace in the recipe. Depending on your personal taste and your desired results, you can replace all of the oil or only some. In a recipe containing 1 1/2 cups of oil, for example, you could substitute 1 1/2 cups of applesauce or 1 cup of applesauce and 1/2 cup of oil, or another combination of your choice.

2. Mix the applesauce with the other wet ingredients in the recipe. These might include water, any oil you chose to leave in the recipe, eggs, vanilla extract and/or alcohol. Mix well to blend these ingredients.

3. Combine all of the dry ingredients in the recipe. This probably includes salt and flour along with spices and other similar ingredients. Mix well to blend the dry ingredients completely.

4. Combine the wet mixed ingredients with the wet dry ingredients. Stir as little as necessary to blend the two, then proceed with the recipe as normal. The more you stir, the tougher the finished cupcakes will be.
