What To Drink At A Party Instead Of Alcohol

If you are pregnant, a designated driver or simply someone who doesn't drink alcohol, attending parties can present a challenge. When everyone else is having wine, beer or cocktails, you deserve a tasty beverage too. Thoughtful hosts will stock several nonalcoholic options.

Sodas

Whether the party is at a restaurant, a hall or a private home, soda will probably be available. Cola, ginger ale and lemon-lime soda are usually stocked in a bar to use as mixers. The bartender or host will be happy to pour you a glass of soda on ice. You can even request a garnish such as a lemon or lime wedge or a maraschino cherry. Seltzer water is also stocked as a bar mixer. Served with a twist of lemon or lime, seltzer is a refreshing option.

Mocktails

"Mocktails" or "virgin" cocktails have become increasingly popularity as party hosts have realized that not everyone wants to drink alcohol. Many people are familiar with the Shirley Temple from childhood. Children (and kids at heart) enjoy this simple concoction of ginger ale, grenadine and a maraschino cherry garnish. A nonalcoholic margarita is easy to whip together. Combine margarita mix with lemon-lime soda for a similar flavor.

You can enjoy nonalcoholic versions of traditional brunch cocktails such as the bloody mary and the mimosa. Request a virgin mary, and you'll enjoy the tangy zip of tomato juice, Tabasco sauce, lemon juice, pepper and Worcestershire sauce. It has all the flavor of the alcoholic version, just none of the vodka. For a mock mimosa, combine orange juice and seltzer water.

Juices

A variety of juices such as cranberry, grapefruit and orange juice are standard fare on bars. Many mixed drinks make use of these juices. Request a juice spritzer-a glass of cranberry juice mixed with a splash of lemon-lime soda or a seltzer water. You may also opt for a simple glass of orange juice. Request that your nonalcoholic beverage be served in a wine glass, a collins glass or a martini glass if you want to blend in with the crowd.

Punch

Fruity punches are often served at home parties or events such as baby and bridal showers. Check first to see if alcohol was added, but often punches are nonalcoholic. They are usually a mixture of juice and soda. Often sherbet is added for additional flavor and creaminess.

Tea and Coffee

On a cold day, a warm beverage such as tea or coffee will warm you up. Either of these should be readily available at any party. Ask if the host has any herbal teas such as mint or chamomile, in addition to standard black tea. Request a splash of vanilla syrup or a dash of cinnamon to make a cup of coffee more interesting.
