An outdoor light can be safely mounted to a mature tree.
A light mounted in a tree can provide more natural looking illumination in your night-time garden. Affixing a light fixture directly to a tree with screws or nails will not permanently harm a mature tree, Grant Jones, technical adviser to Davey Tree Service in Kent, Ohio, told Home Garden Television. The tree should compartmentalize and heal the wound around it, he said.
Instructions
1. Trim away branches from within 24 inches on all sides of a spot at least 15 feet up a mature tree. Use bypass pruners or a pruning saw. The Family Handyman magazine online recommends mounting a light from 15 to 30 feet up a tree and leaving at least one branch between the light and the ground to simulate moon shadows.
2. Screw the wired outdoor light fixture to the center of a 4- by 5-inch piece of cedar or pressure treated wood.
3. Drill pilot holes with your electric drill for 3-inch galvanized screws in the 4- by 5-inch wooden piece. Make at least one hole above and below the light fixture--depending on the width of your tree.
4. Climb up the ladder with the wood panel with light attached, screws and screwdriver. Put the screws into the pilot holes and screw the wood with the light fixture into the tree.
5. Hammer U-shaped electric clips into the tree around the wire extending from the bottom of the light fixture every 3 feet down the tree.
