Types Of Hibiscus Flowers

The Hibiscus is a flowering plant that typically grows in warm tropical climates. Some types are perennial, meaning that they return every year; others are annual, and grow for only one season. They may grow on a woody shrub or a small tree. There are approximately 220 species of hibiscus worldwide.

Hawaiian Hibiscus

Only about 7 of the nearly 220 hibiscus species are of Hawaiian origin, yet somehow hibiscus plants are always associated with Hawaii. Hibiscus arnottianus is a recognizable species of hibiscus that has a white flower. Hibiscus brackenridgei is Hawaii's state flower (see Resources).

Rock Hibiscus

Native to Mexico and the Southwestern United States is the Rock hibiscus. It is a shrub-type of plant which clings onto rocky formations. It can also survive at elevations of up to 2,000 feet (see Resources).

Chinese Hibiscus

The national flower of Malaysia, the Chinese hibiscus is a flowering shrub native to Asia. In spoken Malay, the species is called Bunga Raya, meaning "Big Flower" (see Resources).

Rose of Sharon

Rose of Sharon is another name for the species Hibiscus syriacus. This is the flower of South Korea, with edible blooms which blossom in a variety of shades (see Resources).

Sea Hibiscus

The Sea hibiscus is native to areas such as Australia, Tahiti and Hawaii. The wood from its tree serves as wood carvings, firewood and in the construction of boats. It is also trimmed down and used in the art of bonsai.
