Use A Cork Screw

You can remove a cork from a wine bottle with two basic types of corkscrews. The most basic corkscrew is a metal spiral spike centered on a wooden or plastic handle. A more elaborate corkscrew will have the spiral spike centered in a device that has arms, or wings, that can be pressed down to remove the cork with very little effort. Both versions operate in a similar fashion.

Instructions

Basic Corkscrew

1. Position the end of the metal spiral spike over the center of the cork to be pulled from the wine.

2. Turn the handle of the cork screw to screw the spike into the cork.

3. Continue turning the cork screw until the spike begins to protrude from the bottom of the cork.

4. Hold the bottle securely with one hand and pull the cork from the bottle using the handle of the cork screw.

Winged Corkscrew

5. Raise the metal spiral spike to its highest position in the winged cork screw device by turning the handle in a counter-clockwise motion.

6. Position the spike over the center of the wine bottle. The round portion of the device should be centered over the top of the wine bottle.

7. Ensure that the wings are in the "up" position.

8. Use the handle to screw the spiral spike into the cork.

9. Press down on the wings, or arms, of the corkscrew device. The cork will be removed from the wine bottle as the downward motion of the wings pull the spiral spike upward.
