Take The Bitterness Out Of Tomato Sauce

Tomato sauce can be bitter if don't follow a few tips.

Tomato sauces can be made at home to suit your specific tastes. It can also be made in a large batch to save money on purchasing cans of tomato sauce from the grocery store. The downside of using a homemade tomato sauce recipe, is that the sauce may turn out to have a bitter taste to it. Fortunately, there are a few tips you can follow to make sure this doesn't happen.

Instructions

1. Remove the seeds from the tomatoes before you set them in your blender. The seeds are bitter, and removing them reduces the natural bitterness that is associated with tomatoes.

2. Add 1 tsp. of sugar to your homemade tomato sauce for every 28 oz. of pureed tomatoes. Sugar is sweet and counteracts with any bitterness that remains in your tomatoes.

3. Wait until the last 15 to 20 minutes of cooking your homemade tomato sauce to toss in any herbs. Herbs that are cooked for a long period of time tend to taste bitter. You may think that the bitterness is coming from the tomatoes, when it is in fact coming from the herbs.

4. Cook your homemade tomato sauce in a stainless steel pot instead of an aluminum pot. Aluminum reacts with the acid in the tomatoes, causing a bitter taste to form in the sauce.
