Dry A Watermelon Rind

Watermelon is a healthy and delicious fruit - although the fleshy red portion is not the only thing fit to eat. Many people dry watermelon rinds to prepare for pickling or dry roasting. Preparing the rind in this manner makes for a tasty treat, unlike the common way most people consume the fruit. Dry watermelon rind and throw nothing away, making use of every portion of the fruit. Follow the steps below to learn dry a watermelon rind at home.


Instructions


1. Cut the watermelon into manageable slices - each slice measuring approximately the size of your hand.








2. Dismember the fleshy, red part of the fruit. Scoop out the fleshy, white part of the fruit - leaving only the green rind.


3. Dice each rind into 1-inch sections and place the rind into a rimmed dish. Set the dish aside.


4. Dissolve 4 tbsp.of salt into 2 quarts of water. Pour the mixture over all pieces of the rind. The salt water ultimately serves to eliminate moisture enzymes and oxygen from the rind to expedite the drying process. Place the rind in the refrigerator for five and a half hours. Remove from the fridge and quickly rinse the rind with cold water to remove residual salt. Place the rind on a clean plate, cover with plastic and back into the fridge. Continue to step 5 to take the drying process one step further.


5. Preheat a pan on medium-heat. Place the rind into the pan. Dry roast the rind for up to three minutes and remove from heat.
