Instructions

Make the Perfect Bloody Caesar

1. Understand the origin: The Bloody Mary, on which the Bloody Caesar is based, is a drink that was invented in the early twentieth century and has since become a brunch-time staple. While the origins are unclear, it's influence on the bar and tavern world is clear. There are a myriad of drinks that have been inspired by, and invented because of (or in spite of), the Bloody Mary. In New Orleans, the Bloody Bull takes the traditional Bloody Mary and adds beef consomme. A Bull Shot leaves the tomato juice out all together, using ONLY beef consomme. A Bloody Maria uses tequila instead of vodka. And in Canada, the Bloody Caesar reigns supreme. Using a bottled, pre-made tomato and clam juice cocktail mixed one to one with vodka, this is a refreshing twist on the old standard. This recipe will show you make the mix from scratch, making your own delicious cocktail that will keep your friends coming back for more (This recipe yields six cups, or around 10-12 drinks worth of mix).

2. Assemble the mix. In a large, clean plastic container with a secure lid (preferrably an old vegetable oil container, or even a gallon or half gallon milk container), combine the tomato juice, clam juice, horseradish, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, celery salt and pepper. Secure the lid tightly and shake the container vigorously for ten to fifteen seconds. Place the mixture in the refrigerator for an hour or so. The flavor of the mix will improve if it is allowed to rest for a bit.

3. Mix the cocktail. Pour the mix into an attractive glass carafe for presentation while mixing the cocktail for your friends. Prepare your highball glasses by rimming each glass with a lime, then dipping into a plate of sea salt. Fill each glass completely with ice. Pour halfway up with vodka and top off with the Caesar mix. Garnish with a celery stick and serve immediately.
