Make Squaw Bread

Squaw bread, now more often known as "Indian Maiden Bread," is a delicious fried bread with a crispy outside and a light, fluffy inside. Traditionally, squaw bread is served fresh and hot with maple syrup sauce or melted butter, or with a cup of steaming hot chocolate.

Instructions

Squaw Bread

1. Mix the salt, baking powder, shortening and water. Stir in the flour a little at a time until the mixture reaches the consistency of biscuit dough.

2. Place the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut it into small squares. Be careful not to handle the dough too much.

3. Fry the squares of dough in a deep fat fryer or a kettle of hot fat until the squaw bread is light golden brown.

4. Remove the squaw bread from the hot oil and let it drain briefly on a layer of paper towels.

5. Provide a dish of hot maple sauce and some warm butter and serve the squaw bread while it's steaming hot.

Maple Syrup Sauce

6. Bring the brown sugar and light corn syrup to a boil in a saucepan over medium high heat. The mixture will be thick, but don't dilute it with water.

7. Stir in the maple extract and cayenne pepper.

8. Remove the saucepan from the heat and stir in the bacon drippings until the maple syrup sauce is smooth.

9. Serve the maple syrup sauce warm with hot squaw bread.
