Make Simple Deviled Eggs

Make Simple Deviled Eggs

Deviled eggs are a simple, old-fashioned addition to any picnic or potluck. Easy to make, these favorites can be dressed up in many ways and flavored with a wide variety of spices.

Basic deviled eggs are a blank canvas for your culinary experimentation and, once you know the basics, let your imagination guide you.

Instructions

Preparing the Eggs

1. Bring water to a boil in a large pot. You will want enough water to cover the eggs after they are added.

2. After water reaches a rolling boil, gently add each egg to the water. You will want to lower them into the water with a spoon. Boil for 10 minutes. Remove from stove and pour off hot water. Replace with cool water and let eggs cool.

3. Gently rap egg on counter to break the shell, then peel it, being careful to avoid breaking the egg. Rinse under cold water to remove all bits of shell.

4. Cut each egg in half the long way to create two oval halves. Scoop out the yolk and put in a mixing bowl. Set the whites aside on a plate.

5. Mash the yolks with a fork. Add mayonnaise and mix well. Continue adding mayonnaise until the yolk mixture reaches the desired consistency. Some people prefer a thick yolk mixture, while others like a creamier texture.

6. Add desired spices and other condiments. See tips for ideas.

When the yolk mixture tastes the way you want, spoon into egg whites. You can also use a pastry bag to fill the eggs.

Garnish with a sprinkling of paprika or a bit of parsley.

Refrigerate until ready to serve.
