Substitute Blueberries For Strawberries

Select plump and fragrant fresh blueberries as a substitute for strawberries.

Strawberries make a delightful and healthy addition to a wide variety of foods such as salads, juices, desserts and pastries. If you happen to run out of strawberries or do not enjoy adding strawberries to recipes, you can substitute them with blueberries instead. Blueberries are equally succulent, flavorful and nutritious, and add an intense, purple tinge to foods.

Instructions

1. Replace strawberries with an equal quantity of fresh or frozen blueberries in recipes for salads, smoothies, cakes, muffins and other pastries.

2. Use frozen blueberries without thawing while baking pies, tarts, cakes and muffins. This will keep the blueberries firm and prevent them from turning mushy in the baked food.

3. Add 1 tsp. of lemon zest or lemon juice when substituting strawberries with fresh or frozen blueberries in muffins and cakes. Alternately, if your recipe requires orange zest, replace it with an equal quantity of lemon zest.
