Peel & Cut A Watermelon

You can cut ripe watermelons in wedges.

Watermelon is summer's reward for gardening. As temperatures climb there isn't much that's more cooling than a slice of ice cold watermelon. Make a watermelon slushy by whirring frozen chunks of the melon in the blender with orange juice. Spike the slushy with vodka for a barbecue or turn it into watermelon daiquiris. Don't waste the rind. Peel off the touch green skin and pickle the inner rind for a taste of summer in the middle of winter.

Instructions

1. Rinse the watermelon off under cold water to get rid of any dirt. Sometimes the underside will have soil clinging to it.

2. Place the melon on a flat work surface. A cutting board, either plastic or wood, is ideal.

3. Put a knife on the top of the watermelon in the center. Press down using a sawing, or back and forth motion, until the knife has cut the melon in half.

4. Put one half flat side down on the work surface. Cut the half in half. Put the other half flat down on the work surface and cut it in half. You now have four quarters. Cut each quarter into 1 inch slices.

5. Place the knife where the bright pink flesh of the watermelon ends and the greenish-white rind begins. Cut the flesh from the rind by applying pressure to the knife as you move it.

6. Place the knife where the green of the peel meets the greenish-white rind. Remove the peel by cutting it away from the rind. Cut the rind in chunks for making pickled watermelon rind.
