Cube An Avocado

Avocado is used in Mexican dishes and is the base for guacamole.

Avocado is a fruit that comes in more than 500 varieties. The most popular kind is called Hass, and is sold in the produce sections of many grocery stores. It is an oval-shaped fruit with green, pebbly skin. There is a large seed in the middle and the fruit has a nutty flavor and a smooth texture. If you've never tried one, next time you make a salad, cube an avocado and put it on top.

Instructions

1. Hold the ripened avocado and cut it lengthwise, working around the seed. Twist the halves to separate them.

2. Lift the seed out gently with a spoon. A method that takes more skill is to hit the seed with a knife and twist to lift it out.

3. Cradle half of the avocado in your hand with the flesh side up. Use the paring knife to cut parallel lines in the flesh down to the skin.

4. Cube the slices by cutting the opposite way being careful not to cut through the skin. Scoop the cubed avocado from the skin with a spoon, beginning at the wide end. Repeat this process on the other half of the avocado.
