Substitute Allspice In A Recipe

Allspice is a common sight in pantries, but you can make a quick substitution if you don't have any.

Allspice is also known as Jamaica pepper because the 16th century Spanish explorers who came across the Allspice plant on the Caribbean island thought it looked like a pepper. The plant was later given the English name "allspice" because it seemed to have the smell of multiple spices, including cloves, pepper, nutmeg and cinnamon. If your recipe needs allspice but you don't have any, just combine the right spices and you'll be in business.

Instructions

1. Gather your ingredients.

2. Make sure the cinnamon, nutmeg and cloves for your allspice concoction are ground.

3. Measure out 1/3 tsp. of cinnamon.

4. Measure out 1/3 tsp. of nutmeg.

5. Measure out 1/3 tsp. of cloves.

6. Mix the ingredients until well blended. This will give you a 1 tsp. equivalent of allspice

7. Triple the spice amounts and measure out the correct amounts if you want greater quantities.
