Make Grandmother'S Delicious Southern Candied Yams

Candied yams are a traditional Thanksgiving side dish.

Candied yams are a staple of Thanksgiving dinners everywhere. While some people slice the yams and eat them in chunks, the ubiquitous Thanksgiving dish consists of yams that are soft like mashed potatoes and covered with a thin layer of crispy brown sugar and butter. Variations on candied yams include sprinkling them with pecans, cinnamon and marshmallows. If you grew up in the South, you may have fond memories of your grandmother's candied yams and wish to replicate the recipe.

Instructions

1. Peel six large yams and slice them into 1-inch chunks.

2. Boil the yams for 30 minutes or until they are soft and tender. Drain the yams by pouring the water through a colander. Mash them in the pot with a potato masher.

3. Scoop the mashed yams into a 9-by-12-inch casserole dish.

4. Cover the top of the yams with 2 cups of brown sugar. Add 1/2 cup of pecans and 1/2 cup of miniature marshmallows.

5. Melt 1/2 cup of butter and pour it over the top of the brown sugar mixture. Sprinkle the surface of the casserole with cinnamon.

6. Bake the yams at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 30 minutes.
