Halloween Appetizer Recipes

Candy may be the Halloween treat of choice, but there are plenty of other tasty Halloween treats. Halloween appetizers can be used to help create the spooky atmosphere for your Halloween party or to add a little fun to the family dinner table. Appetizers are also a great way to give your kids something a little healthier to eat between bouts of frantic candy consumption.

Ghoulish Jello

Many of the best Halloween appetizers are actually classic recipes reworked with a Halloween theme. Because it can be given nearly any shape, Jello is one of the classic Halloween standbys. Pour Jello into a mold shaped like a brain, hand, skull or other body part and leave it in the fridge for about three hours or until it settles. Then, dunk the bottom of the mold in warm water and carefully slide the Jello out onto a plate. You can enhance the creepiness with the right Halloween candy. For example, you can add gummy worms to a brain mold to get a zombie brain or add candy eyes to a skull to make a zombie.

Boo-Nanners

Halloween candy is delicious, but adding some fruit appetizers will let your guests get a healthier sugar fix. Boo-nanners, from the site goneraw.com, are delicious Halloween ghosts made out of fruit. Each banana makes two boo-nanners, so start by slicing half as many bananas in half horizontally as the number of treats you want to make. Dip each banana slice in orange juice and roll it in dried coconut shavings. Make two eyes for each banana ghost. If you want to stick with the all-fruit theme, stick two currants or raisins in near the tapered end of the banana. For a little more sweetness, you can use candy corn, M&Ms or any other small candies. Put each boo-nanner on a stick and serve. If you prefer, you can freeze them before eating.

Halloween Shapes

One good way to make Halloween recipes is to cut your favorite treats into Halloween shapes. You can stamp cookies out with Halloween cookie molds in shapes like pumpkins, ghosts and witches. Add black- and orange-colored sprinkles to stick with the Halloween theme. With a little ingenuity, you can even make vegetables and dip into an exciting Halloween treat. Carve carrots, celeries and other greens into tombstones, and you can create a miniature vegetable graveyard that is perfect for snacking.
