Appetizers That Go Well With Wine

Shrimp cocktail can be served with a white wine like a Riesling.

When pairing wine and appetizers, choose foods that will whet the appetites of your guests without overwhelming their taste buds. Consider the strength of flavors in your foods and wines instead of simply pairing foods with red or white wines.

Bread and Cheese

Bread and cheese are a natural pairing to nearly any wine. Start with light white or red wines and mild cheeses, such as Riesling and Gamay with mild Cheddar and Gouda. Choose plain flavors for the breads or crackers so they don't overwhelm the wine. Gradually put out stronger matches as the evening progresses, such as Merlot with aged cheddar, and Cabernet Sauvignon with Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Fish, Seafood and Beef

You can't go wrong pairing sparkling wine with nearly any type of fish or seafood appetizer. Champagne is classic with oysters or caviar, of course, but also with scallops or smoked fish. Shrimp cocktail goes best with Riesling. Carpaccio is a sophisticated appetizer and can be made of beef or fish. Serve the fish with a Sauvignon Blanc and the beef with a Barberra or Cabernet Rose.

Olives and Nuts

A platter of olives, nuts and even dried fruit is a traditional accompaniment to wine. Choose olives that aren't too strong so they don't overwhelm the wines. The fat and salt in nuts is an ideal contrast to the acidity of the wines. Dried fruits add a rich, sweet edge, especially later in the evening when served with a dessert wine.
