Make Healthy Fried Chicken

Fried chicken is considered a good old American favorite. If you are trying to make healthy food choices, fried foods are off limits. It is still possible to enjoy a healthy version of fried chicken simply by varying your cooking methods slightly.


Instructions


1. Pick the right parts of the chicken. A chicken consists of two types of meat, white meat or dark meat. The white meat is the healthiest choice. Chicken breast is a part of the chicken made up of entirely white meat.


2. Clean the chicken. Chicken fat and the skin are high in calories and fat content. In order to make healthy fried chicken, you need to remove the fat and skin. Once you have removed both, rinse the chicken off in cold water. As an alternative, you can buy boneless, skinless chicken breast from your local grocery store if it is available.








3. Season your chicken. There are a wide variety of spices that you can use to season your chicken. Salt and pepper or Cajun spices are some of the options available. Keep in mind to watch the amount of salt you use if you are opting to follow a low sodium diet.


4. Dip the chicken in a mixture of one egg and a little bit of water. If eggs are forbidden on your diet, you can use skim milk.


5. Coat your chicken. You can use flour if you plan on frying your chicken in oil or corn flake crumbs if you plan on making oven fried chicken. You can season the flour if desired.


6. Cook your chicken until it is done all the way through. If you fry the chicken in oil, use canola oil. If you oven fry your chicken, spray non fat cooking spray on the chicken to make the coating crispy once it is cooked. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Cook the chicken at least thirty minutes or until the chicken is cooked thoroughly.


7. Remove as much oil as possible from your chicken. You can do this by allowing any excess oil to drip off of the chicken and then blotting any visible oil off of the chicken using paper towels.
