Cook Scalloped Potatoes

Try scalloped potatoes for something a little bit fancy.








Tired of mashed potatoes for your side dish? Try scalloped potatoes and get raves, even from your children. They're more complex to prepare than mashed potatoes, but are well worth the extra effort.


Instructions


1. Peel potatoes and let sit in cold water as you make your other preparations.


2. Brown onions over low heat. When onions are soft and glossy looking, add garlic and continue to heat until the garlic is just beginning to brown. Set the onion and garlic aside.


3. Melt butter or margarine in a saucepan over very low heat. You don't want to burn it, just melt it. When the butter is all melted, slowly add 1/4 cup flour, stirring to remove all the lumps.


4. Add milk to the mixture to create a thick sauce. It should flow without being too liquid.


5. Add table salt to taste, black pepper, a pinch of parsley flakes and a pinch of oregano flakes. Stir well. Add the onion and garlic mixture until fully combined.


6. Spray baking pan with nonstick coating product.


7. Slice all potatoes into 1/8-inch slices. Spread in the baking dish. Spoon the white sauce mixture over the potatoes. Grate cheddar cheese over the potatoes and white sauce.


8. Cover the pan with aluminum foil so the top does not touch the cheese on top. Bake in 350-degree oven for one hour and check doneness with a fork. When the fork goes in easily, your scalloped potatoes are ready to serve to family and guests. This recipe serves 6 easily.
