Keep An Avocado From Turning Brown

Keep an Avocado From Turning Brown

Avocados turn an unappetizing brown color when exposed to air, due to the presence in the fruit of enzymes and phenolic compounds, which encourage oxidation. What can you do to prevent the oxidation? There are several methods, all of which prevent the enzymes in the cut avocado from combining with the oxygen in the air. Use more than one for best results.

Instructions

1. Cut the avocado in half, around the large central pit.

2. Twist the avocado halves to separate them. Rub 1 tsp. of lime juice over the cut edges to slow the browning. Submerge the cut fruit in water with 1 tbsp. of lime juice for up to one hour if not using the cut fruit immediately.

3. Scoop out the pit and spoon out the avocado fruit into a bowl.

4. Prepare your avocado using a recipe or as desired.

5. Cover the top of the prepared avocado by spreading a thin layer of olive oil over the surface.

6. Press a piece of non-gas permeable plastic wrap directly on top of the surface of the avocado. Store your avocado dish in the refrigerator to further slow the rate of browning.
