Try making a homemade dressing for a creative salad.
A flavorful dressing makes a simple salad unforgettable. Many salad dressings are easy to create from home and are healthier than dressings bought at the store, which often have a high sugar content. Combine different flavors to create a new dressing. Fruits, oils, vinegars, spices and herbs can be used to make salad dressing.
Poppy Seed Dressing
This dressing tastes excellent drizzled over a plate of crudit s (sliced raw vegetables), coleslaw or a salad made from mixed greens. You need ½ cup sugar, 1/3 cup apple cider vinegar, 4 tsp. grated onion, 2 tsp. ground mustard, 1 tsp. poppy seeds, ½ tsp. of salt and 3/4 cup of vegetable oil. Mix the sugar, onion, mustard, salt and poppy seeds. Add the vinegar and mix. Whisk the dressing as you slowly add the oil.
Lemon Dill Dressing
Try a dill dressing over a plate of sliced cucumbers, tomatoes and feta cheese for a change of pace from a traditional lettuce salad. The ingredients are ½ cup dry white wine, 1 tbsp. lemon zest, 2 tbsp. fresh dill and 2 tbsp. of olive oil. Mix all the ingredients in a food processor and serve.
Sweet Dijon Dressing
This dressing is good for any salad. Try using dried cranberries and toasted walnuts for enhanced flavor. You need 1/3 cups apple cider vinegar, 1/3 cup Dijon mustard, 1/3 cup olive oil and 3 tbsp. of honey. Whisk all the ingredients together briskly. Make sure the honey is thoroughly mixed in and add an extra tbsp. if the dressing is not sweet enough for you.
Strawberry Balsamic Vinaigrette
Try this vinaigrette dressing on a salad made with romaine lettuce, freshly sliced strawberries and shrimp. The ingredients are 3 tsp. strawberry jam, 1 tbsp. balsamic vinegar and 3 ½ tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil. Mix the jam and the vinegar thoroughly. Add the olive oil and continue whisking until thoroughly mixed.
Italian Salad Dressing
An Italian salad dressing is delicious on a fresh garden salad or mixed with pasta, chicken and vegetables for a pasta salad. You need 1/3 cup sugar, 1 packet Italian salad dressing mix, 2 minced garlic cloves, ½ cup cider vinegar, ½ cup water and ½ cup vegetable oil. Mix the first four ingredients and then add the water and mix again. Whisk the oil in slowly until all ingredients are fully mixed.
