Fix A Stapler With A Double Staple Jam

Staplers can be refilled and cleared by pulling open the top portion.

Stapler jams can be frustrating, but you don't have to borrow your coworker's stapler to fix the problem. Stapler jams occur when staples become wedged in the stapler's magazine, and sometimes it makes it impossible to open the stapler. If you experience a staple jam, don't attempt to staple multiple times on top of the jam, as this can cause double and triple staple jams. Clearing a jammed stapler can prevent a lot of headaches caused by lost and disorganized groups of papers.

Instructions

1. Open the top of the stapler, if possible. If you are able to get the top of the stapler open, move unused staples and remove the jammed staples with your fingers or the paper clip. These staples will be wedged in the front opening of the stapler. If you can't open the stapler, it is possible to remove jammed staples from the outside.

2. Straighten the paper clip so one end of the metal is poking straight outward.

3. Poke the paper clip gently into any openings near the front of the stapler. Most staplers have openings in the bottom of the front portion or along the sides. Slide the paper clip back and forth until you remove the staples or push them back into the stapler's magazine. Attempt to fish out the jammed staples several times and from different angles until you loosen them up.

4. Open the top of the stapler and remove freed staples that are bent or warped. Refill the stapler with fresh staples and close the lid of the stapler. Test it to ensure it is working. If not, repeat Steps 1 through 3 or contact a repair person for assistance.
