Foods For A Greek Festival

Greek festivals are full of fun attractions and tasty foods to enjoy.


Greek festivals are full of tradition and culture. Many cities hold Greek festivals yearly for people to experience pieces of the rich culture. These festivals are exciting family events with raffles, jewelry, music and shopping. Families can dance to Greek folk music and learn from artifacts of ancient Greece. Food is an enormous attraction at Greek festivals because of the many tasty traditional dishes. Have fun trying as many different dishes as you can. They are sure to be delicious and filling.


Baklava


Baklava (bahk-lah-VAH) is a sweet pastry made of Greek filo dough. Forty layers of the dough are stacked high and brushed with butter, nuts and spices. The pastry is then drizzled with honey syrup. After baking, baklava can be served in small cupcake cups at festivals.


Gyro Sandwich


Gyros (YEAR-os) are staple Greek foods. These sandwiches are a blend of lamb and beef pan seared with seasonings on top. The mixture is stuffed in a pita and topped with diced tomatoes and onions. This dish also contains another Greek food called tsatziki sauce, which is yogurt mixed with garlic and cucumbers.


Spanakopita


Spanakopita (spa-nah-KoH-pita) is a Greek pastry filled with chopped spinach and feta cheese. The pastry is made from Greek filo dough and brushed with butter. The layered pastries are also stuffed with onions, eggs and seasoning. The pastry has a beautiful golden color after baking. Spanakopita is sliced for serving at Greek festivals.


Souvlaki Wrap








Souvlaki (soo-VLAH-kee) is a popular Greek food consisting of grilled meat and vegetables, usually served on skewers. However, variations of this dish include pita bread. Pork, beef or lamb are meats commonly used in souvlaki wraps. Meat, vegetables, onions, tomatoes and tsatziki yogurt sauce are rolled with the meat into pita bread.


Dolmades


Dolmades (dol-MAH-thez) are popular treats at Greek festivals. The dish consists of stuffed grape leaves. Fillings can include rice, minced meat or grain. Onions, parsley and other spices are also used in this flavorful dish. Modern day versions of dolmades are filled with nuts or raisins for a vegetarian option. The green leaves are rolled up and served as finger foods.
