Make Boiled Peanuts In A Crock Pot

Make Boiled Peanuts in a Crock Pot

Boiled peanuts are a traditional food in many southern areas of the United States, where peanuts are common. Traditionally, they were prepared outside over a fire in a large cast iron pot. Today, however, many people prefer to cook their boiled peanuts in a crock pot or on the stove top. While they do take time to prepare, fans of the boiled nuts will agree it's worth the wait. Use this easy method to make boiled peanuts in a crock pot.

Instructions

1. Remove the shells from the peanuts. Rinse them thoroughly in warm water, until the water comes out clear. You may purchase pre-shelled peanuts, if desired, but these should also be rinsed before cooking.

2. Place the peanuts in a three quart crock pot, and fill with water. Allow the peanuts to soak for eight hours. Add additional water, as necessary. The peanuts will absorb most of the water, so try to keep it as full as possible by topping off every hour or so.

3. Drain the crock pot, and remove the skins from the peanuts. Return them to the crock pot and refill it with water. Add four tablespoons of salt. You can add a little more or less, if desired, to suit your tastes.

4. Cook the salted peanuts on low heat in the crock pot for another eight hours. Turn the temperature to high, and cook the peanuts for an additional 60 to 90 minutes.

5. Drain the boiled peanuts, and place them in a large bowl or other serving container. Allow them to cool for 10 to 15 minutes before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator, or freeze them if they won't be consumed within a week.
