Remove The Stopper From The Tub

Stoppers have become more varied since the time of simple rubber caps.

When you have a slow-moving drain or clogs in the tub drain, remove the tub stopper to access the drain. Tub stoppers can connect to the tub in many different ways. Stoppers have become more varied since the time of simple rubber caps placed into the drain. There are stoppers that operate with levers and some that just simply push up and down. Once you know remove the stopper in your tub, you can quickly access your drain and get your tub draining again.

Instructions

Pop-Up Tub Stoppers With Lever

1. Pull the trip lever at the front of the tub up to open the pop-up stopper. The lever controls the up and down movement of the tub stopper with a link inside the drain pipe.

2. Pull the stopper out of the drain with your fingertips. If the stopper is difficult to remove, wiggle the stopper back and forth until it pulls out of the drain.

3. Disconnect the rocker arm from the spring linkage. The rocker arm is the solid metal piece that attaches to the stopper and the spring that attaches to the hand lever.

Lift Stoppers and Roller-Ball Stoppers

4. Lift the tub stopper open and locate the small screw just under the lip of the stopper. The lift stopper sits on a stem and the set screw holds the stopper onto the stem. Roller-ball and lift stoppers look identical. You pull up and twist lift stoppers while roller balls simply lift up and down.

5. Loosen, but do not remove, the screw with a Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull the stopper out of the tub drain.

6. Turn roller-ball stoppers counterclockwise until the stopper is free from the drain.

Plunger Stopper

7. Remove the two screws that secure the lever faceplate to the tub wall. Plunger stoppers are not visible from the tub because the plunger attaches to the lever inside the drain.

8. Pull the plate and lever away from the tub after removing the retaining screws. The linkage along with the plunger stopper will come out with the lever.

9. Wiggle the assembly gently if the linkage does not move freely out of the drain.
