Lowfat Breakfast Ideas

Eating a lowfat diet is a great way to lose weight and maintain a healthy, balanced diet. Think eating a low fat diet is restrictive? Think again! From oatmeal to bagels to muffins and breakfast pizzas, low fat has never tasted so good!

Low Fat Breakfast on the Go

When you're grabbing breakfast on the go, opt for toast with jam instead of butter or peanut butter or a bagel with low fat or fat-free cream cheese. Fresh fruit and fruit smoothies made with juice or low fat yogurt are also a great choice. Also be sure to keep packets of instant oatmeal at your desk for a quick low fat breakfast.

Quick Lowfat Breakfasts

Oatmeal with fresh fruit is an easy and delicious low fat breakfast. Low fat cereals can be enjoyed with skim milk or fat-free soy milk and fresh banana slices. Low fat granola with low fat yogurt and fruit also makes for a rich and creamy breakfast parfait. Additionally, baked sweet potatoes sprinkled with a little cinnamon and sugar make for a wonderfully healthy low fat breakfast treat. Also look for low fat pancake mixes and frozen waffles in the freezer section of your grocery store and try eating these traditional breakfast staples with fresh fruit or pure maple syrup instead of butter.

For a more decadent low fat breakfast, try making mini pizzas on pitas or English muffins using low fat cheese, marinara and your favorite vegetable toppings. Once assembled, toast the pizza in your toaster oven for five minutes. You can also make your own breakfast wraps and burritos using low fat fillings such as fat-free meatless sausages, low fat cheeses and salsa.

Making Favorites Low Fat

If you love muffins and coffee cakes but not all of the fat usually found in them, make a batch at home using applesauce instead of oil or butter in the recipe but add 1 tablespoon of oil to keep the baked goods moist. Store extras in the freezer and pull a muffin out the night before so it's defrosted in time for breakfast. If you love eggs but not all the fat and cholesterol that comes with them, try making a tofu scramble with light tofu. The taste is similar to scrambled eggs and tofu is also protein rich so you'll feel full all morning. Lastly, if you love meat for breakfast try using meat substitutes, which are fat-free and low fat but just as tasty.
