Identify Nonvegan Ingredients

Being vegan often means spending time investigating the foods you purchase. Before buying any packaged goods, check the ingredient list for any "hidden" animal products. You may be surprised at what you find.

Instructions

1. Look for common animal products in the pre-packaged or prepared foods you buy. If it doesn't say "vegan" on the package, search the ingredient list for animal products such as albumin, caseinate, pancreatin, suet, tallow, animal lard or fat.

2. Avoid whey products. Whey is a by-product of cheese making and comes from cows, sheep or goats. It's commonly used in shakes and other drinks to add protein.

3. Get the specifics when you see that Vitamin D was added to a product. If the product doesn't identify where the vitamins came from, it's better to pass it up. Fish liver oil, milk and egg yolk can all serve as sources of Vitamin D.

4. Steer clear of gelatin, which is is derived from bone shavings of animals.

5. Visit websites like HappyCow.net to find lists of animal ingredients that you should keep out of your diet.
