Make German Twists Doughnuts! Yum!!

Make German Twists Doughnuts! YUM!!

Schlitz kuechla is a German donut recipe in which the dough is twisted and deep fried. The donuts can be dipped or even wrapped around hot dogs.

Instructions

1. Dissolve the yeast in 1/4 cup of warm water. Boil 1/2 cup of water and add the shortening, mixing well. Turn down the heat and add the sugar and salt. Stir until lukewarm. Blend in the yeast, milk and eggs. Gradually stir in enough flour to make a soft dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface. Knead until smooth and satiny, about seven minutes. Place in a lightly greased bowl and turn over to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about one to one and a half hours.

2. Turn the dough onto a floured surface and roll to half-inch thickness. Cut into 8-by-1/2 inch strips and gently roll back and forth to form evenly shaped 12 inch sticks. Fold in half and cross the ends of one stick over another to form twists. Pinch to secure the ends. Cover and let rise for about 30 minutes, or until the dough has doubled in size.

3. Fry the sticks at 375 degrees F. Drain on paper towels, then roll in powdered sugar, brown sugar, regular sugar or cinnamon.
