The Uses Of Dry Mustard

Dry mustard can be used to make condiments, decongestant and hair conditioner.


Mustard powder is the residue produce by grinding mustard seeds. The fresher the powder, the more powerful the mustard powder will be. Whether you prefer the taste of spicy mustard or the simple American-style blend, there are many uses for dry mustard beyond the popular sandwich condiment.








Spicy Mustard and Beer Sauce


Add 3 tablespoons beer to 1/4 cup dry mustard and mix thoroughly. Stir in 1/2 teaspoon olive oil, 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper and 1/2 clove minced garlic. Stir until smooth. Serve on as a condiment for sandwiches and hot dogs.


American-Style Condiment


Measure 2 oz. dry mustard into the top of a double boiler. Cover with boiling water and place over the bottom of the double boiler filled with boiling water. Simmer over medium heat for 15 minutes. Stir mustard and water into a paste and add 1 teaspoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/4 teaspoon turmeric and 1 teaspoon vinegar. Mix completeley and cook over low heat until desired thickness is reached. Remove from heat and let stand two hours. Store at room temperature for up to two weeks. Serve as a sandwich condiment or dipping sauce.


Sore Throat Remedy


Mix 1/2 teaspoon dry mustard powder with 1 teaspoon honey in 1 cup of hot water. Gargle mixture for 60 seconds then spit out. Repeat daily as needed.


Decongestant


Clear chest congestion with dry mustard by rubbing 1 teaspoon of dry mustard powder mixed with 1 tablespoon of olive oil onto your chest. Cover with a warm, damp wash cloth for 5 minutes. Wash with soap and water. Soothes chest congestion for up to 8 hours.


Sooth Sore Feet


Soak feet in a tub of hot water and 2 teaspoons dry mustard powder for 10 minutes. Cleanse feet with soap and water. Repeat daily as needed.


Condition Damaged Hair


Mix 2 teaspoons dry mustard powder with 1/2 cup olive oil. Rub between palms and massage into hair focusing on the ends. Cover hair with a shower cap or bandanna overnight. Wash and rinse as normal.


Storing Dry Mustard


Keep fresh ground mustard powder fresh by storing in a sealed container in the refridgerator with a slice of lemon for up to one week.
