What is the Process Flow in Sugar Milling?
Sugar milling is the process or taking sugar cane and extracting the raw sugar from it for cooking and eating purposes. This process begins after farmers harvest and deliver the sugar cane to the factory or mill for processing and refining.
Cleaning Process
Sugar cane is first shredded and milled. These processes begin to separate the sugar juice from the cane and breaks down the stalks for further processing and refinement. Clarification coagulates impurities in the juice, while the filtration process removes it from the juice.
Juice Process
Evaporation turns the juice into syrup, while crystallizing turns the juice into a mixture of syrup and crystals. Fugalling (spinning the mixture) separates the sugar from the syrup; the process repeats until all raw sugar is available for drying and storage.
Refinement
Sugar refinement will remove virtually all impurities from the raw sugar. The sugar again goes through a syrup process and then a liquor process. Scum is gleaned from this liquid, which represents more impurities. The process completes with crystallization and drying stages, which complete the refinement; the sugar is then ready for packaging.
