Peel A Pomagranate

Peel a pomegranate carefully to harvest as many of the whole juicy arils as possible. Pomegranate arils are small red juice-filled pods that contain a single seed. Pomegranates have a hard outer skin that encases a spongy white membrane and the red arils. Gently peeling the white membrane away from the hard outer skin helps to release the red arils without breaking them and releasing their juice. Get the most out of every pomegranate by removing the arils carefully and efficiently.

Instructions

1. Set the whole pomegranate on a stable cutting board and use a sharp chef's knife to slice off the top and bottom.

2. Turn the pomegranate onto its newly flattened base and cut it into quarters.

3. Fill a large mixing bowl with cold water and lower it into the sink.

4. Hold one quarter of the pomegranate under water in the mixing bowl and use your fingers to peel the white membrane and red arils away from the hard peel.

5. Continue peeling each segment of the pomegranate under water until all the arils have been release. The red arils will sink to the bottom of the mixing bowl while the white membrane floats to the top.

6. Discard the peels and skim the white membrane from the surface of the water.

7. Pour the remaining contents of the mixing bowl through a strainer and dump the arils onto a paper towel.
