Rehydrate A Dried Apple

Apples are among the dried fruits that can easily be rehydrated.

Dehydrating apples is the process of removing most of the moisture from the fruit, which allows you to store the apple for a longer period of time. Although dried apples can be eaten, you can also add moisture back into them by re-hydrating them. Re-hydrating dried apples is appropriate when you want to add them to cakes, cookies, pies or other foods that require a softer consistency. You can use more than one method to re-hydrate dried apples.

Instructions

Soaking in Water

1. Locate a bowl that is large enough to hold the dried apple; fill it with 1 1/2 cups of lukewarm water from a faucet. Set the bowl aside for 30 minutes to allow it to reach room temperature.

2. Place the dried apple inside the bowl and move it around so that the entire outer surface of the apple is wet.

3. Set the bowl aside and allow the dried apple to soak for 30 minutes.

Boiling in Water

4. Place a small saucepan on a stove burner and turn the burner to medium-high heat.

5. Fill the saucepan with 1 cup of water for each cup of dried apple that you are re-hydrating. If you are re-hydrating more than this amount, use 1 1/2 cups of liquid for each cup of dried apple

6. Wait until the water boils, and place the dried apple into the water.

7. Allow the apple to boil for approximately five minutes and check the consistency by sticking a fork into it. If needed, allow the apple to boil for another two to three minutes, until the fork slides easily into and out of the apple.

8. Turn off the stove and remove the apple from the pan using a pair of tongs. Allow the apple to come to room temperature before using, or if adding to already hot ingredients, proceed with cooking.
