Top your pancakes with homemade syrup.
Store-bought syrup often includes ingredients you can't even pronounce. Instead of serving these syrups on your pancakes or waffles, make your family homemade syrup. Homemade syrup made with fruit is delicious, inexpensive and can be made quickly.
Instructions
1. Wash your fresh fruit or berries or let frozen fruit thaw to a soft stage. Measure the fruit in the 2-quart saucepan.
2. Add water to saucepan using the lesser amount at first. If you need more after the syrup is cooking, add it then. Add the sugar and stir with spatula or wooden spoon, until thoroughly mixed.
3. Turn on stove to low heat. This is a slow-temperature cooking recipe. You want the full flavor of the fruit or berries to blend well with the other ingredients. Add 3 tablespoons of cornstarch before the mixture heats. Stir to mix well.
4. Cook over low heat until the mixture has a shiny look. Then increase the heat, by a little, to slightly hotter temperature. Cook and keep stirring until it has little bubbles, but not boiling. As this is cooking, check for desired consistency, adding more cornstarch and/or water as needed. If you carefully lift the spatula or wooden spoon from the syrup, you should be able to see if it is the thick texture you want.
5. Remove from heat. Serve hot or cooled in a glass bowl. Refrigerate, cooled syrup leftovers in a glass container with a tight lid.
