Cool Ice Cubes Without An Esky Cooler

Esky is a brand of coolers designed and made in Australia by the Nylex Corporation. The designs vary from small, soft-side, personal-use boxes to large-capacity cold chests. High-performance models from Esky are insulated to keep ice cubes frozen for up to three days. Capabilities of an average cooler can be augmented with additional levels of insulation to imitate the conditions inside an Esky cooler and keep ice cold for an extended period of time.

Instructions

1. Place reusable synthetic ice packs into the standard cooler. Pour in as many ice cubes as possible without preventing the lid from closing. Lock or fasten the lid closed if the cooler has a built-in closure system.

2. Seal the entire seam between the cooler base and lid with a strip of wide duct tape.

3. Lower the sealed cooler into a thick plastic trash bag. Gather the bag just above the lid and force out the trapped air. Close the bag, then seal it with a plastic zip-tie.

4. Wrap a heavy wool blanket around all sides of the cooler on the outside of the plastic bag. Secure the wool blanket with bungee ties. Reassemble the insulation each time the ice cubes are accessed.
