How Wine Coolers Are Made

The Ice Cube Method

One way to make an wine cooler is using the ice cube method. In this method, the wine is frozen into ice cubes. Then it is taken out of the freezer and put into the type of liquid desired. This liquid could be any kind of soda water or tonic water along with some sugar in it. When the wine goes into the soda, it will melt and be evenly distributed throughout, creating the desired mix.

Mixing a Wine Cooler

Another way to make the wine cooler is to have all the ingredients pre-chilled in a refrigerator. Some great ingredients can include lemon-lime soda and various types of juices. The non-alcoholic ingredients are mixed, and then the wine is added slowly and mixed. Add a few ice cubes to chill further.

Commercial Wine Coolers

Before laws were passed in 1991 that raised the taxes on wine, most commercial wine coolers were made with wine in a similar fashion to the ways listed above, just on a larger scale. Some continue to do it in this way despite the higher costs. However, many companies have switched to using a malt type of alcohol, filtering it until there's little taste left and then flavoring it heavily with sugar and juice to create a similar flavor to a wine cooler.
