Make A 3d Model Of A Spiny California Lobster

Remember that spiny lobsters do not have claws.

There are only clawed and spiny lobsters. Clawed lobsters live in cold waters off the Atlantic coasts of the United States, Canada and Europe. Spiny lobsters live in warm waters in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, the South Atlantic and in the Pacific from Australia to California. All lobsters have five pairs of legs. Clawed lobsters have claws on the front four pairs of legs and the claws on the front pair of legs are very large. Spiny lobsters do not have claws. Instead they have a pair of spines over their eyes. Skilled artists can sculpt a three dimensional lobster out of clay or wax. Children and less skilled artists can use the method described here.

Instructions

1. Prepare to model your California Spiny Lobster. Look at photographs of lobsters and identify the thorax, tail, flippers, legs, antennae and spines.

2. Model the thorax and tail by drawing the top and sides of each on the two blocks of styrofoam with an indelible marker. Carefully rough out the two shapes with a small, serrated knife. Finish the shapes by carefully sanding them. Glue the tail to the thorax. Seal the styrofoam by covering the thorax and tail with glue.

3. Model the fins by drawing them on a piece of construction paper. Cut out the shapes with scissors. Repeat several times until the fins can be assembled to the desired thickness. Glue the layers of the fins together. Cut a slot in the back of the tail. Glue the fins into the slot.

4. Model the legs by gluing pipe cleaners into the thorax. Bend the pipe cleaners to the appropriate angle. Roll and glue three tubes of construction paper. One tube should be about 3/8-inches in diameter. The second tube should be 1/4-inches in diameter. The third should be about 1/8-inches in diameter. Cut each tube into ten roughly equal pieces. Cover each pipe cleaner with the construction paper tubes, with the largest tubes closest to the thorax and the thinnest at the end.

5. Cover six pipe cleaners with glue and insert them into the upper thorax to represent spines and antennae. They are easy to bend and the glue will make them smooth when they dry.

6. Finish the lobster by placing it on a sheet of newspaper and spray painting it red. Then glue two black beads to the front of the thorax to represent eyes.
