Control Garden Slugs And Snails

Garden snails are not as welcome as escargot.

Serve five snails on a plate in France and it's called "escargot." Five snails in a U.S. garden are just called pests. Snail and slug control can involve pesticides, or you can pursue a simpler method.

Instructions

1. Cut four 1-inch holes, one per side, on the sides of a gallon plastic milk jug about 1 inch up from the bottom. Use a pocketknife, a craft knife or kitchen scissors.

2. Mix the sugar, baking yeast and water together in a large measuring pitcher. Let the mixture sit for about 15 minutes. Gently swirl the ingredients around for another minute.

3. Dig a shallow depression and bury the milk jug in the soil up to the bottom edge of the holes. Leave about a 4-inch margin of cleared soil between the buried milk jug and neighboring plant material.

4. Pour the liquid snail bait into the milk container up to the bottom edge of the holes. The slugs will be attracted to the yeasty, fermenting mixture and drown when they fall in.

5. Check the container every few days. Empty the trap and replace the bait every two days, when it loses its effectiveness.
