Cook them right and your kids will ask for brussels sprouts.
Despite their healthiness, brussels sprouts are not known for their popularity with kids -- according to Slate.com, a 2008 survey conducted by Heinz shows that brussels sprouts are one of the most hated vegetables among American children. This may not be without just cause. If brussels sprouts are prepared incorrectly or eaten out of season, they may not taste as good. However, if prepared the right way, your kids will enjoy them. Fortunately when preparing this veggie for children, the simplest way is often the best way.
Instructions
Roasted
1. Preheat your oven to 375 F.
2. Cut off the bottoms of your brussels sprouts and peel off the outer leaves. Slice the sprouts in half and rinse them in cold water.
3. Dump them into a large mixing bowl. For every two cups of sprouts, add one tbsp. of olive oil. Toss the sprouts in the oil, coating them.
4. Spread them out on a baking sheet. Sprinkle the sprouts with black pepper and sea salt. Roast them for 15 to 20 minutes, turning them over halfway through to ensure that they roast evenly.
Sauteed
5. Cut off the bottoms of your brussels sprouts and peel off the outer leaves. Slice the sprouts in half and rinse them in cold water.
6. Cut up your sprouts into thin slices.
7. Melt a pad of butter in a pan over medium heat, coating the pan. Dump your sprouts into the pan and saute them over the heat until they turn a bright green color and start to brown along the edges.
8. Scoop your sprouts into a serving dish. Cut a lime in half and squeeze the juice over the cooked sprouts. Sprinkle with salt and pepper to taste.
