Cognac is an extremely high quality brandy, grown in a particular region of France and aged for at least 2 years. Although cognac can be mixed in a variety of different ways, the best way to drink it is straight. Warm the cognac, take time to notice its smell and appearance, then sip just enough to taste. The more attention you pay to this complex liquor, the more you will come to appreciate its character.
Instructions
1. Get a proper cognac glass (see Resources below). Some great cognac glasses are stemless, but a glass with a stem will work as well.
2. Carefully pour a small quantity of cognac into a glass. Different connoisseurs recommend anything from about a tablespoon to just over an ounce.
3. Warm the cognac by holding the glass in the palm of your hand for at least 8 minutes.
4. Look at the cognac. Notice what color it is. Cognac can be any color, from pale yellow to a deep auburn. Usually, the older the cognac, the darker the color.
5. Sniff the cognac and pay attention to the aroma. Different cognacs have different accents. Swirl the cognac around and sniff again.
6. Sip the cognac. Take just enough to taste it and enjoy the flavor.
