How Does Margarita Mix Work?
The Classic Margarita
The Margarita is a Mexican cocktail perhaps made famous by Jimmy Buffet when he sang the song "Margaritaville." The original margarita has had many variations made to it since then, and mixes are now being sold in liqueur and grocery stores alike. The classic margarita is made by mixing 2 ounces of tequila, 1 ounce of fresh lime juice and 1 ounce of Triple Sec or Cointreau in a shaker with ice. Wipe the rim of a special margarita glass with a lime and then dip into coarse salt. Pour in the margarita and dress the glass with a lime wedge. For a little extra touch to the classic margarita, some like to add a Grand Marnier floater to the top of the drink.
Other Margarita Mixes
You can find many of the common premade margarita mixes in a store. Some of these mixes already have the tequila in them, but many call for you to add your own tequila. They are a mixture of fruit juices such as lemon, lime, tangerine and strawberry. The best kinds to buy are the refrigerated brands because they taste fresher. Some of these custom-made margaritas use fresh fruit in the mix. Melon, kiwi and mango are some of the more popular fruits to use.
The Frozen Margarita
Frozen Margaritas are made in a special frozen drink machine. These machines have condensers and evaporators and actually freeze the drink but do not use ice.
To make them at home without a frozen drink mixer you can use crushed ice in a blender or smoothie maker. The key to the frozen margarita is to use just the right amount of sugar. A lot of the frozen margarita recipes call for 3 ounces of sour mix, which is not normally a regular margarita. The mixes are basically the same, and you can use fresh fruit in these also, but many of the recipes use the fruit liqueur in place of the fruit, such as strawberry or banana liqueur. Frozen margaritas are a wonderful drink but are usually very sweet.
